EPA

Definition

EPA — the United States Environmental Protection Agency — is the U.S. federal agency responsible for protecting human health and the environment. Its responsibilities include administering and enforcing multiple federal laws related to environmental and public-health protection.[1]

In the pesticide field, the EPA receives regulatory authority under FIFRA and other federal laws. It manages pesticide registration, risk assessment, labelling, production-facility oversight, post-registration review, compliance monitoring and enforcement. The Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) is the EPA unit primarily responsible for pesticide programs.[2][3]

For disinfectants, sanitizers, sterilants and other antimicrobial pesticides, the EPA reviews registration applications under FIFRA. For public-health claims, such as killing specified bacteria or viruses, it also evaluates efficacy data to determine whether the label claims are adequately supported.[4]

An EPA-registered disinfectant is a pesticide product that has been registered by the EPA under FIFRA and other applicable laws.

  • EPA Registration Number
  • EPA Establishment Number

The first identifies an EPA-registered pesticide product. The second identifies a facility that produces pesticides, active ingredients or other regulated products; an EPA Establishment Number does not mean that every product made at that facility has obtained EPA product registration. EPA also requires relevant pesticide-producing establishments to register and submit production reports.[5]

EPA = the regulatory agency; FIFRA = an important legal basis for EPA pesticide regulation; EPA Registration = a specific regulatory action carried out by the EPA under FIFRA and other applicable laws.
