Basis Weight, GSM
Definition
Grammage, commonly expressed as GSM (grams per square metre), is the mass of a material per unit area.
For example:
60 GSM means that one square metre of the material has a mass of 60 g.
INDA (the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry) defines basis weight as the weight of a fabric per unit area; grams per square metre is a commonly used unit. ISO 9073-1:2023 specifies a method for determining the mass per unit area of nonwovens.[1][2]
In wet wipe specifications, GSM is an important parameter describing the amount and structure of the nonwoven. When fiber composition and manufacturing process are comparable, a higher GSM means more material per unit area and generally results in a thicker-feeling finished material.
